Harriet Manners knows a lot of things. She knows that cats have 32 muscles in each ear, Bluebirds can’t see the colour blue and the average person laughs 15 times a day but she doesn’t know why nobody at school seems to like her. So when she’s offered the chance to reinvent herself, Harriet grabs it. Can she transform from geek to chic?

I heard all about ‘Geek Girl’ during the year and treated myself to it many weeks ago and decided that the book would make for perfect reading during the Christmas break and I was delighted to, as I was able to give the book my full undivided attention.

The story of ‘Geek Girl’ is seen through the eyes of the creatively named Harriet Manners, an extremely intelligent young girl who finds it difficult to interact with social scenarios, resorting to either hiding under tables or sprouting out random facts much to the amusement of her tormentor Alexa, a delightfully horrible character who preys upon poor Harriet. Harriet’s only real friends in life is her best friend Nat, who longs to be a model and Toby her considerate stalker and fellow geek.

‘Geek Girl’ is a wonderfully aspirational story and is well worth of all the hype surrounding the series. With an ingenious lead character, that you can instantly warm to, this story is addictive from the very start. I loved Harriet, I loved her naive innocence about the world, how she would hide herself away from trouble and use her knowledge as a manifest to her tormentors, I found myself reading these parts aloud to the people around me, not only for the entertainment value but also sharing the facts. With not only a great lead character, Harriet’s friends and family also are wonderful, from Toby, one of the most considerate stalkers that I have ever had the joy of reading to Wilbur, the model scout had a particularly interesting dialogue, that had me chuckling throughout.

‘Geek Girl’ without a doubt, is a truly heartwarming and exceptional book, that shines a little of sunshine for the inner geek inside all of us.
