In 1982, on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday beneath the stifling heat of the midday sun, three children start a game that ends in tragedy. Now, thirty years later, Nick, Luke and Katie are estranged, yet still bound together by the dark truth of what happened at the river that day. Except some secrets won’t stay buried. And when Luke suddenly vanishes and the threatening messages begin, it seems that the strings of the past are tightening around them all. Because someone else knows what they did and is intent on seeking justice, at any cost.

‘Only We Know’ is the first book that I’ve read by writing duo, Paul Perry and Karen Gillece and it’s a gripping introduction with their windy tale of mystery and revenge.

The story is mostly seen through the eyes of a young woman called Katie, an Irish journalist who is asked to investigate the sudden death of her childhood friend, Luke. Unknown to others, Katie used to be best friends with Luke and his brother Nick when they all lived in Kenya, but when a horrible incident happens to the childhood friends, their friendship is torn apart and they all return home to Ireland, never to speak of it again.

It’s only when thirty years later, when they return to Kenya as per Luke’s request that old memories and ghosts reappear.

The story flows at an easy pace, flashing back and forth from past to present tense and this provides a strong and engaging story. The characters are all interesting and complex as they all have their own issues and dramas to deal and everyone has different memories of that fateful day when their lives changed forever. The synopsis of the story is very real and you could well believe it happened and this made for very realistic and gripping reading, so much so that I consumed the book in one day.

Set against the poverty stricken backdrop of Masai Mara and the bleak, cosmopolitan of Dublin, the cultures and lives clash as people try to deal with everyday problems in their own ways.

Intriguing from the very first page, ‘Only We Know’ is a dark and twisty story filled with guilt emotions, wrecked lives and so many troubled characters, making everyone a suspect in this dark tale.
