Maddy, dressed in white, stands at the back of the church. At the end of the aisle is Rob – the man she’s about to marry. Next to Rob is Ben – best man and the best friend any two people ever had. And that’s the problem.

Because if it wasn’t Rob waiting for her at the altar, there’s a strong chance it would be Ben. Loyal and sensitive Ben has always kept his feelings to himself, but if he turned round and told Maddy she was making a mistake, would she listen? And would he be right? Best friends since childhood, Maddy, Ben and Rob thought their bond was unbreakable. But love changes everything. Maddy has a choice to make but will she choose wisely? Her heart, and the hearts of the two best men she knows, depend on it…

To say that I fell in love with this book would be an understatement as when I came to the last few pages of the story, I was literally in tears on a crowded bus. Crying quietly at the end of the beautiful book, I was aware of the quizzical glances from my fellow travelling companions as I furiously dug about my bag for a tissue but finding none, had to use my sleeve instead to wipe away my tears.

‘You’re The One That I Want’ is a beautiful and tenderly written story that Giovanna should be proud off. A sweet tale of three young children who become best friends in primary school. A new girl joins the school and two boys take her under their wing, looking out her. The story reflects on how the relationship changes through the years, as each of them take on different role. From best friends to boyfriend and girlfriend, the boy who looks on and the girl who wonders ‘what if’?

The story starts in the present, when Maddy is walking down the aisle to her future husband with his best man beside him and as she starts to get closer, the story then really begins with flashbacks from Maddy and Ben from they first meet to present time as they battle with new relationships and emotions.

I loved this book, I thought Giovanna had completely perfected setting of the three best friends as they mucked about as children until growing older and there was a shift in the relationship, where Ben had to take a back seat in the friendship and watch the woman he was always been in love with, be taken away from his best friend. As the story is seen from the perspective of both Maddy and Ben, it makes for heartbreaking and poignant reading as Ben bottles up his emotions and shares with us with his true feelings and Maddy begins to see her best friend in a new light.

Throughout the promotion of this book, there were Twitter campaigns of what team you were on, whether it was Team Ben or Robert, but I must admit my heart belonged to Ben all the way. Gentle with an artistic flair, he had the sweetest way of professing his feelings and showing his concern at Maddy, especially with the hand squeezing technique that did make me ah at regular moments.

With one of the prettiest covers that most definitely stands out from the shelves, this books is sweetly written in a time that can I remember well as a teenager, ‘You’re The One That I Want’ is a story that captivated me and quite quickly made Giovanna become one of my favourite authors. As much as I adored ‘Billy And Me’ it was Giovanna’s second book that really stole my heart. Filled with relatable characters and scenarios, ‘You’re The One That I Want’ is an fresh, intense and occasionally raunchy story of love and friendship and I couldn’t put it down!
