To mark the release of this story, Avon Books Editor, Kate Ellis share her thoughts and reactions on this heartbreaking story.

  1. What was your initial reaction after finishing this book?
OMG I need to talk to someone now!!!! No one else had read it, apart form the author and his agent, so I excitedly tweeted him because I couldn’t take not saying anything at all! I shared it with the rest of the team instantly and urged them to read it. The poor team has had to listen to me bang on about it for absolute months!
  2. What would you compare this book to?
The first name that popped into my head was Jojo Moyes. She has a way of writing heartbreaking, but truly beautiful, stories and characters that stay with you, and that’s exactly how I feel about ‘Time to Say Goodbye’. I’d also say that it has a touch of John Green in it, too. If you love beautiful, touching stories that will make you shed a tear or two, then this is definitely for you!

  3. How did decide on the gorgeous final cover?
It was a challenge! We were going in a slightly different direction at first and we all agreed that it just didn’t feel right. So I did some research into what was working in the market for that genre, and we came up with a direction we wanted to go in. We really talked in depth with the designer and it seemed to work, because look what she created, it’s perfect! We all knew it was the one as soon as we saw it. We literally stood around a computer screen and all pointed at it. She absolutely nailed it!
  4. What was the Editorial process like?
I sadly didn’t get to work through the entire editorial process, but Stuart’s first editor did a fantastic job! I barely had to do anything by the time I got my hands on it. It’s a truly stunning, well polished book. The process for the next one has been a joy so far, you’re all in for a real treat, again…!
  5. Why should everyone read this book?
BECAUSE IT’S JUST SO INCREDIBLE!! But actual reasons instead of my biasness? Because it’s so memorable. I think no matter what age you are or what your interests are, there’s something in this book for absolutely everyone. It’s a touching family story that tells the people left behind what they need to know. It’s also a fresh take on the popular weepy, looking at family relationships rather than romantic relationships. Think Ben Sherwood’s The Life and Death of Charlie St Cloud. I promise you, it’s a well worth read.
  6. How many tissues did you get through?
The first time? A full pack of my lovely Disney Princess tissues. The next few times? Kleenex’s mansized tissues. The tears get worse when you know what’s going to happen…!
