The Impulse Purchase By Veronica Henry
‘The Impulse Purchase’ is the latest by Veronica Henry.
Cherry, Maggie and Rose are mother, daughter and granddaughter, each with their own hopes, dreams and even sorrows. They have always been close, so when, in a moment of impulse, Cherry buys a gorgeous but rundown pub in the village she grew up in, it soon becomes a family affair. All three women uproot themselves and move to Rushbrook, deep in the heart of Somerset, to take over The Swan and restore it to its former glory. Cherry is at the helm, Maggie is in charge of the kitchen, and Rose tends the picturesque garden that leads down to the river. Before long, the locals are delighted to find the beating heart of the village is back, bringing all kinds of surprises through the door. Could Cherry’s impulse purchase change all their lives – and bring everyone the happiness they’re searching for?
Lead by a strong female cast, ‘The Impulse Purchase’ is a lovely strong of three generations of women starting over in a small village whilst bringing hope and opportunities to others.
When celebrating her husband’s 70th birthday, Cherry is overcome with the need to do something for herself for a change and not for others and using the money left to her by her mother, she invests in the derelict pub in her childhood town. Her husband thinks it’s a ridiculous idea but she’s determined to prove him wrong so with the help of her daughter Maggie and granddaughter Rose, she’s going to be turn The Swan back into the bustling hive of activity that she once remembered.
I loved the women in this story, they were strong, determined independent all out to prove their capabilities. The 3 generations made for lovely reading with their close bond and how the women look after each other during the hard times, united in grief after the loss of Frank, Maggie’s husband. Rose has never gotten over her father’s death and is anxious about the future for her little girl and family. She invests her time with helping others, people with addictions and sometimes finds it hard to separate her job from her life.
The story is also seen from the perspective of 2 other people in the village, teenager Chloe who’s holding her family together due to her mother’s own addiction and Russell, the local farmer who’s supplying food to the pub, who’s also adapting to life and loss and finds himself warming to the newcomers, especially Maggie.
Beautifully written and packed with heart, this story was a joy to read from the start. Packed with charm, relatable characters and scenarios, ‘The Impulse Purchase’ is a story about friendship, start-overs and and there’s always some logic behind impulse buys.
