Swept Away By Beth O’Leary
‘Swept Away’ is the new book by Beth O’Leary.
Lexi is looking for no-strings-attached fun with a stranger. She deserves one night for herself, doesn’t she? Zeke is looking for love. But for one night with a woman like Lexi, he’ll break his rules. Sparks fly at the pub, one passionate kiss leads to another and they end up stumbling home to the marina together. The next morning, hungover and shaken by an amazing night together, Lexi is more than ready for Zeke to leave. There’s just one small problem . . . the houseboat they stayed on has been swept out to sea. As their supplies start to run dangerously low, and the waves pick up, Zeke and Lexi soon realise there’s much more on the line than their new relationship. How long can they really survive on a drifting houseboat in the North Sea? Will search and rescue find them? And who will they be if they both make it back to dry land?
The latest book by Beth O’Leary literally swept me by this weekend and I consumed it in two days as I couldn’t put it down!
Like all of Beth’s books, the story is seen through the narrative of Lexi and Zeke, a couple who have a one-night stand expecting never to see each other again. But having spent the night on a houseboat, they are then swept out to sea and are now living in each other’s pockets in one of the scariest and most intense situations of their lives.
I adored this story; the characters are amazing and the cramped space of ‘The Merry Dormouse’ was such a lovely setting. Lexi is 31 and is unsure of where her life is going having just moved out of her home leaving behind her best friend and daughter Mae. Zeke is 23 and has just bought his dead father’s houseboat hoping to find some answers from his estranged father and is seeing a therapist about his addiction to one-night stands. They are completely different people but living in extreme conditions with their lives in danger, Lexi and Zeke begin to see further than a one-night stand.
This story is fun, romantic and lovely, I loved the interactions between Zeke and Lexi as they rattled around the small boat with Zeke whipping up delicious food with their limited supplies, they shared dreams, hopes as well as maintaining a strong belief that they would be saved. I loved the inclusion of a small, injured seagull called Eugene who ended up eating their bread.
Settle down for the perfect love story with a fabulously unique plot, characters that were fun and relatable and situations that kept on the readers on their toes, ‘Swept Away’ is just the story to get lost in this summer
