Best friends from work, May Lara and Clare are desperate for some time away. They have each had a rough time of it lately and need some serious R&R. So they set off to a luxurious spa for ten glorious days, but when they arrive at their destination, it seems it is not the place, they thought it was. In fact they appear to have come to entirely the wrong village. Here in Ren Dullem, nothing is quite what it seems; the lovely cobbled streets and picturesque cottages to hide a secret that the villagers have been keeping hidden for years. Why is everyone so unfriendly and suspicious? Why does the landlord of their holiday rental seem so rude and why are there so few women in the village? Despite the strange atmosphere, the three friends are determined to make the best of it and have a holiday to remember. But will this be the break they all need? Or will the odd little village with all its secrets bring them all to breaking point?
I really enjoyed ‘It’s Raining Men’ I thought it was the perfect antidote for whenever we were having our own rain storm in Northern Ireland, so it was only appropriate to snuggle up with book with a cup of tea. The story is primarily seen through the eyes of the three lead characters, Lara, Clare and May who are all desperate for get away from their own hidden heartache and spend some time together to catch up and unwind.
Clare is unhappy in her life, finally she gets the promotion that will make her parents proud, but even though her boyfriend loves her, the relationship lacks the passion that she craves for and feels like she comes second in the relationship after his phone constantly seems to have his attention. Feisty career woman Lara is tired of being taken for a mug, having to look after James’ children who quite obviously dislike her and wonders where James is as he regularly has to work late and is known for having a wondering eye and finally there is shy May, who thinks she has finally found her happy ever after in the form of Michael but is heartbroken to discover that not everything is as it seems.
Through a misfortunate series of events, the pampered break that the women were looking forward to turns out to be an unexpected nightmare as they end up in some strange old fashioned village called Ren Dullem, that is overrun with men, mystery and there is hardly a woman in sight. The villagers treat the women coldly and are rude to the outsiders making them feel terribly unwelcome, but as the week goes by, the locals bar a few crazy ones begin to warm to the strangers. With some hilarious scenes and characters, we join the women as they finally begin to relax and open up to one another enjoying the mysterious change of scenery and the abundance of men, the appearance of a magical lagoon and the serene old woman called Raine, who lives at the top of the hill overlooking the village.
Not only is the story seen through the eyes of the three women, there is also a smaller sub story which does makes for interesting reading, as a new comer arrives in the small village determined to find out the source of secrecy of the village, through this story we are told the history and the magic of the strange village.
‘It’s Raining Men’ is a lovely tale, packed with strong women, men to lust after and a strange village filled with quirky characters with a cleverly written and most magical storyline, this story was enchanting. With an air of mystery and unpredictability from the very first page, this captivating story of friendship, love and magic will have you hooked with twists and turns throughout. Be prepared for a magical roller-coaster of a story.
