Abbey Anderson is the last person to go looking for change. Yes. it’s tough that she barely sees her mother these days but in San Francisco, she has great friends, a steady relationship and a job that she enjoys. But when Abbey is contacted by Irish lawyer Ryan Gilligan she learns in an instant that everything that she believed about her roots is a lie. She must travel to Dublin to find out more – but she’s only off the plane when she is plunged into another new crisis. One that will change everything not just for Abbey but for the family in Ireland who had no idea that she even existed.
‘Things We Never Say’ is the first book that I have by Irish author Shelia O’Flanagan and I must say I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed the story. Initially I was quite intimated by the sheer size of the book, but once I started the book, I was intrigued from the very start that I was unable to put the book down.
The story is seen though a few different perspectives but is primarily seen through the eyes of Abbey as she discovers that her family roots is indeed a lie. So she goes to Ireland to meet her new found family and thus crisis ensues, as the Abbey’s rather safe but oddly strange world comes crashing down around her. Abbey, as the main character was a captivating one, creative with a hesitant flair, she is the sweetheart of the story that with a occasionally naive outlook to life, it’s hard not to fall for her. The additional characters who are her new family are all quite interesting and complex in their personalities and lives, self absorbed to the point of being horrible, they all make for interesting reading as they battle to get what they believe is rightfully theirs and as much as I would love to go into each character in detail, I worry I would give too much away! Although the addition of handsome and loveable Irish man Ryan gave the story quite a charming slant as he took on the unlikely rule of becoming Abbey’s protector in the strange country.
I must say that this is wonderfully unique story with a refreshing twist that I have never read before. Set in two locations, rural Ireland and San Francisco, the story is so vividly written at times, that you feel you are alongside Abby on her journey of discovery whether it’s in snow covered Ireland or sunny San Francisco.
A poignant yet enthralling story that had my attention throughout, with great dialogue, complicated characters and filled to the brim with twists, ‘Things We Never Say’ is a fine story of family values, love and creative nails! Highly recommended.
