David Nicholls Releases New Book – Us

David NichollsI have exciting news for fans of David Nicholls, as he is releasing a new book this year called ‘Us’.

For those who don’t know who David is, he is the author of the highly acclaimed book ‘One Day’ which was named 2010 Galaxy Book of the Year and was later made into a film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgress. The story follows the lives of Emma and Dexter, a couple who meet on 15th July (St Swithin’s Day) for twenty years.

Nearly five years after the release of ‘One Day’ and after writing the successful BBC Drama, ‘The 7.39’ David is finally returning to our bookshelves with a book called ‘Us’

In a press release by Hodder and Stoughton, it revealed the premise of ‘Us’ by which is being published on 30 September 2014 and tells the story of Douglas Petersen, whose marriage of twenty-one years to Connie is almost over. When Autumn comes around, their son Albie will leave for college. Connie has decided to leave soon after.

But there’s still the summer holidays to get through – a Grand Tour of Europe’s major cities – and over the course of the journey, Douglas devises a plan to win back the love of his wife and repair his troubled relationship with his son. Forced to understand why his marriage is in tatters, he looks back to the beginning of their relationship and learns once again whom he fell in love with.

‘Us’ is the history of a family, recounted over the course of what may well be their final weeks together. It’s a comedy about the demands of living together, about parenthood, about the relationship between reason and emotion, art and science, parents and children, middle-age and youth.

Covering nine countries and twenty-five years, ‘Us’ is epic and intimate, funny and heartbreaking. No-one can write as brilliantly, poignantly and hilariously as David Nicholls about love, life and loss. His many fans will not be disappointed.

David Nicholls explains that part of the inspiration for the book “came from publicising One Day throughout Europe, visiting all the extraordinary places that I’d have loved to have seen as a back-packing teenager but never got the chance”.

“So Us is a road-trip, with all the pleasures and disasters of a long, difficult journey,” he says. “It’s a love story of course, and I hope there’s the same mixture of comedy and drama that I’ve strived for in the other books. But it’s also about family – the bond of marriage and the demands of parenthood.”

Jamie Hodder-Williams, CEO of Hodder & Stoughton says: “The book trade and millions of readers have been waiting for a new book from David and he has written a truly wonderful novel. He delivers all the wit and intelligence that made One Day such a spectacular success. We are thrilled to be publishing it”.

I think it is fair to say that fans of David Nicholls including myself eagerly anticipate the release of ‘Us’
