My Heart And Other Black Holes By Jasmine Warga

[amazon_link id=”1444791532″ target=”_blank” ]My Heart And Other Black Holes[/amazon_link]’My Heart And Other Black Holes’ is Jasmine Warga’s debut book.

Aysel and Roman are practically strangers, but they’ve been drawn into an unthinkable partnership. In a month’s time, they plan to commit suicide – together. Auden knows why she wants to die: being the daughter of a murderer doesn’t equal normal, well-adjusted teenager. But she can’t figure out why handsome, popular Roman wants to end it all….and why he’s even more determined than she is. With the deadline getting closer, something starts to grow between Aysel and Roman – a feeling she never thought she would experience. It seems there might be something to live for, after all – but is Aysel in so deep she can’t turn back?

Words cannot express how much I fell in love with this story. I read this book over a 24 hour period and it was such a incredibly touching and sensitive story, that I hugged it at the end.

Beautifully written in a frank and sweet way, we follow the life of strangely named Aysel, who became a social outcast after her father killed a fellow student. Terrified of life, unhappy and worried that she will turn out like her father, Aysel decides that her life isn’t worth living and signs up to a suicide website looking for a partner to help her along the way. Set up like a dating website, you have to fill in specifications for your suicide so you can find the perfect partner and that’s how Aysel finds FrozenRobot aka Roman, a handsome has-been lusted after basketball star, but just like Aysel has become tired with life and wants her to commit suicide with him on April 7th.

The story then flows on a countdown to 7th April as the two unlikely people become friends, find solace in each other’s pain and have a mutual understanding in becoming tired with life. But as the story develops and Aysel then finds things that she wants to do before the desired date like contact her father and make amends with her mother. And as each day passes, we see little chinks of light and hope get brighter as Aysel finds a reason to live for.

Aysel and Roman are the sweetest couple that you could read about. Both are witty with dark, sarcastic humour, they compliment each other perfectly, from the popular jock to the school nerd. Sadly given their circumstances, their moments together are often fun and entertaining which makes for bittersweet reading, as they become closer and confide in one another.

A story with a terribly sad premise, ‘My Heart And Other Black Holes’ is a tremendously uplifting and poignant story that will tug at your heartstrings. Sensitively written and highlighting the issue of teenage depression, Jasmine Warga is an original voice to look out for in Young Adult Fiction and Aysel and Roman are a couple that I would love to read more about. A heart stopping and captivating debut. I adored it!
