The Day You Saved My Life by Louise Candlish
I heard a lot of talk on Twitter about “The Day You Saved My Life”, how it was a intriguing and a thought provoking read, so when I received a copy of it, I was eager to see what all the hype was about.
On a Summer’s day in Paris, tourists on a river boat along the Seine are shocked when a two year old boy falls over board and a stranger jumps in after him saving his life. The story of that fateful day follows on the lives of those affected, James the hero who saved young Mikey’s life, his wife Alexa, the mother and grandmother of the young boy Holly who is suffering from post-natal depression and Joanna who has spent her entire adult trying to make sure that her daughter doesn’t repeat her mistakes.
I enjoyed this book, I thoroughly did. All the characters were fascinating as they all lead their normals lives, whilst trying to hide secrets that are gradually tearing their lives apart. I thought Holly in particular was quite a remarkable character, as she tackled post-natal depression and came out the other side, finally seeing that there was light at the end of the tunnel and there was something for her to get up for each morning. Sometimes I felt myself sympathise with her and other times, she annoyed me as I felt she didn’t properly take responsibility of her actions.
“The Day You Saved My Life”, will have a mixture of emotions racing through you, from shock, empathy to anger and sadness. This book is one of the most turbulent yet gripping books I have had the pleasure of reading. A wonderfully written story about parenthood and just how far you would go for the one you love, this book oozes tension from very first page.
Louise Candlish is a new author for me and “The Day You Saved My Life” has definitely left me wanting more.
