It all starts, as these things sometimes do, with a dead man. He was a neighbour, not someone Abby knew well, but still, finding a body when you only came over to borrow a tin of tomatoes, that comes as a bit of a shock. At least, it should. And now she can’t shake the feeling that if she hadn’t gone into Simon’s flat, if she’d had her normal Wednesday night instead, then none of what happened next would have happened. And she would never have met Melody Black…

This is the first book, I’ve read by Gavin Extence and for the last couple of days this tragic tale really hooked my attention.

The story is solely seen through the narrative of Abigail Williams, an aspiring, young journalists who dreams of writing for the big newspapers, living with her boyfriend, Beck, she has an turbulent relationship with her father. But, it’s at the start of the story, that she stumbles across her dead neighbour, that Abby’s life really changes and it wasn’t for the better as her life quickly unravels, we join Abby as she tries to put the pieces back together and make herself whole again.

Abby is a complex character, passionate and driven, she is constantly looking for the next big story and seems to thrive on drama. Her boyfriend seems to be only stable thing in her life and he’s always there helping her get through times with her father, a man who has repeatedly let her down, and is busy with his French model lover, Maria.

As Abby concentrates on the bigger story, she finds herself drawn into a world that isn’t good for her, it consumes her and she finds herself struggling with reality and this is when she finds Melody Black, another troubled young woman and together the two women embark on a friendship that helps them through the hard times.

I genuinely loved this story. Initially I didn’t like Abby, I thought she was a bit too self absorbed and wrapped up in things and occasionally thought she was a bit unfair to others, particularly her Beck and her older sister, who were only looking out for her. But, as the story progresses, we begin to see another side to Abby. Even though she acts all confident and strong, underneath, she is a vulnerable young woman who is trying to keep her head together and even though she pretends, the fact that she found her dead neighbour, it has really affected her.

The story focuses on the issues of mental heath and just how fragile life is. Even though the subject is quite serious, the story is written frankly and honestly and throughout it, there is the injection of dark humour that lightens the situation. ‘The Mirror World Of Melody Black’ is a tender and clever story that made for enjoyable reading and with a beautifully, sparkly cover, it will definitely stand out on the bookshelves.
