An inspiring, uplifting and sympathetic story about sexuality and self-acceptance, Lucy Sutcliffe’s debut memoir is a personal and moving coming out story. In 2010, at seventeen, Lucy Sutcliffe began an online friendship with Kaelyn, a young veterinary student from Michigan. Within months, they began a long distance relationship, finally meeting in the summer of 2011. Lucy’s video montage of their first week spent together in Saint Kitts, which she posted to the couple’s YouTube channel, was the first in a series of films documenting their long-distance relationship. Funny, tender and candid, the films attracted them a vast online following. Now, for the first time, Lucy’s writing about the incredible personal journey she’s been on; from never quite wanting the fairy-tale of Prince Charming to realising she was gay at the age of 14, through three years of self-denial to finally coming out to friends and family, to meeting her American girlfriend Kaelyn.
‘Girl Hearts Girl’ is the first book by film editor Lucy Sutcliffe and gives an honest and insightful account of a girl trying to deal wth her sexuality from a young age.
The story is written frankly and seen through the eyes of Lucy. Starting from primary, school, the story flows at a sweet and truthful pace, as she deals with insecurities, bullies, new friends, potential love interests as well as dealing with conflicting and unwanted feelings that she struggles to hide and is afraid to acknowledge incase her friends and family neglect her.
Along her journey, she meets Kaelyn, another girl who is also struggling with her sexuality and between their strong bond and their love, they both find the courage to acknowledge themselves and their love for each other.
I loved this tender and honest story, we see a young woman deal with confidence and her identity, as she battles to settle in but with the aid of a great network of friends, we see her blossom into a beautiful and inspirational woman.
‘Girl Hearts Girl’ is based on Lucy’s own coming out and her relationship with her first girlfriend Kaelyn. As the couple are based in different countries, United Kingdom and America, they created videos of their times together and these videos and blog posts made the young couple an internet sensation, with their stories behind their realisations about themselves and their relationship, they have become voice for the LGBTQA community.
With a vibrant cover to match the vibrancy of the tale. ‘Girl Hearts Girl’ is a beautifully and innocently written story about the troubles of identity and fitting in. Packed with inspirational lines, humour and relatable characters, this courageous book gripped my attention throughout and proves to be a motivational and uplifting story about about the struggles of coming out and finding light at the end of the tunnel.
