Bodine Longbow loves to rise with the dawn. As the manager of her family’s resort in Western Montana, there just aren’t enough hours in the day – for life, for work, for loved ones. She certainly doesn’t have time for love, not even in the gorgeous shape of her childhood crush Callen Skinner, all grown up and returned to the ranch. Then again, maybe Callen can change her mind, given time. But when a young woman’s body is discovered on resort land, everything changes. Callen falls under the suspicion of a deputy sheriff with a grudge. And for Bodine’s family, the murder is a shocking reminder of an old loss. Twenty-five years ago, Bodine’s Aunt Alice vanished, never to be heard of again. Could this new tragedy be connected to Alice’s mysterious disappearance? As events take a dramatic and deadly turn, Bodine and Callen must race to uncover the truth – before the sun sets on their future together.
I haven’t read many of Nora’s books, to be honest I think I’ve read more as her writing as J.D. Robb than as herself, she’s an author I’ve been looking to read more off, so when I got ‘Come Sundown’, I was curious to see what this author had to offer.
Initially I was disappointed to discover that I found the book a bit hard to get into, I thought the flow of a story was a bit slow, but I persevered and was pleasantly surprised that the more I read, the more enjoyable and chilling I found it to be.
The story is primarily seen through the eyes of Bodine, an independent young woman who manages her family resort which hosts events and horse riding lessons, she is driven by her job and her large family, that she holds close to her heart, until her teenage crush returns and Bodine is brought back to being her awkward self. But it seems that handsome Callen no longer sees her as his best friends younger sister and the two of become close, but just as Callen returns home, women are suddenly attacked and found dead and the police are pointing their fingers at him. Meanwhile, another part of the story sees, a woman becoming hostage to a cruel man who keeps her prisoner for many years, exposing her to sexual attacks and torture.
The story dips between Bodine and the mysterious woman and with this I found the story quite interesting, as Nora weaves the two stories quite cleverly together, forwards the end of the book, I found myself racing through the pages.
There is quite a mixture of characters, all with big and outspoken personalities particularly Bodine and her grammies, who all have an opinion on something, but underneath all that bravado, the family have a strong bond that keeps them close.
With an outspoken heroine and riddled with drama, ‘Come Sundown’ an emotional and romantic tale that made for a chilling story.
