I started to read ‘White Bodies’ a couple of days ago and it seemed to be a book that attracted a lot of attention with various people lifting it up and investigating the stark cover.
To put simply, this book was a strange and an uncomfortable story that delved deeply in obsession, jealousy and sibling rivalry.
The story is solely seen through the narrative of Callie, a strange and potentially troubled young woman who has a strange, obsessive fixation with her twin sister, Tilda.
Tilda is the polar opposite to Callie, where Callie is introverted and reclusive, Tilda is outspoken and dramatic with a successful career in acting, she’s a well known celebrity that embraces the spotlight until she meets the handsome Felix, who she seems to have developed her own obsession with. In her new relationship, she becomes withdrawn and unresponsive to Callie’s interactions.
Callie also becomes obsessed with Tilda and her new relationship. She doesn’t believe that the relationship is as perfect as she is less to believe.
She is also charmed by Felix’s charisma and good looks, but she fears that there is a darkness in him and is convinced Tilda’s life is at risk. Determined to save her, she joins an Internet forum, where she chats to other women who are also in controlling relationship and are seeking advice. So, when Felix is found dead in a hotel room, Callie becomes obsessed with his last moments.
The story flows in a fast style and is cleverly written with chapters alternating from the past and present, really concentrating on the twins’ strange relationship. Callie’s fixation with Tilda, how she regularly was in her shadow and always on the outside looking in.
The book focuses on the issue of domestic abuse and regularly informs the reader of statistics concerning the troubling issue, where incidents are on the rise, resulting in the deaths of both men and women as they try to escape abusive relationships.
A chilling and suspenseful psychological thriller that really pulls the reader in. ‘White Bodies explores the dark side of love not only in relationships of love but also in sisters.
