Out-of-work actor Harriet is recuperating from a crash-and-burn affair with Damian – aka ‘Cockweasel’ – and making ends meet as a barista when she meets two rather lovely men. Tom is a regular at the café, and seems like such a nice guy. Smooth-talking DJ Richard is older, but in great shape – a real silver fox. Deciding to take a chance on both of them, Harriet doesn’t realise at first that she is actually dating father and son. Tom and Richard aren’t on speaking terms, and don’t share a last name – so how was she to know? By the time everyone finds out, both Tom and Richard are truly madly deeply in love with Harriet, and she’s faced with an impossible choice. The story is seen through the narrative of Tom, his father Richard and the new woman that has caught both their eyes, Harriet as well as George who is Richard’s father.

I loved this story, along with the quirky storyline and the flawed characters, this book was a lovely story.

To the outside world, the characters all appear to have their acts together but are all dealing with different things. Richard is popular DJ but has been struggling since his wife asked for a divorce, his relationship with Tom is difficult as Tom blames his father for the family breakdown. Harriet has always wanted to act but when she gets the opportunity to be the Voice of London for the tube and bus services, this opens many new doors and introduces her to Richard and Tom, both of whom she’s attracted to for many reasons and this makes all the relationships hard. Plus she’s been hurt by the creatively named ‘Cockweasel’ and is finding it hard to move on.

This story is a fun one, it focuses on the dynamics of relationships between new partners and parents and children and I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions. George was a fascinating character, pretending to lead a charmed life, he’s charismatic and creative with his thinking, whilst Harriet’s Nanna was colourful with her advice and her love of horror films. I loved Tom, an aspiring musical writer, his dream is to see his stories brought to stage and it’s a joy to join on this journey. His relationship with Richard is difficult and these scenes are hard particularly when the truth is revealed and the life that he thought he knew was not quite what he thought!

The story flowed at the lovely pace and was so easy to settle into, ‘Three’s A Crowd’ is a wonderfully written story and gives an interesting insight into love, relationships and resilience.
