One Moment By Becky Hunter
‘One Moment’ is the latest book by Becky Hunter.
The day Scarlett dies should have been one of the most important of her life. It doesn’t feel fair that she’ll never have the chance to fulfil her dreams – all because she stopped to help a stranger. And now, she’s still … here – wherever here is – watching the ripple effect of her death on those she loved the most. Evie cannot contemplate her life without Scarlett, and she certainly cannot forgive Nate, the man she blames for her best friend’s death. But Nate keeps popping up when she least expects him to, catapulting Evie’s life in directions she’d never let herself imagine possible. If you could go back, knowing everything that happens after, everything that happens because of one choice you made, would you change the course of history or would you do it all again?
I was delighted to be on this tour for this book as I’ve been curious about it for a while and it certainly lived up to its hype.
The story is seen through the narrative of Scarlett on the day that she was killed and how she’s stuck in a limbo watching over her best friend Evie, who’s not only reeling from her best friend’s death but also dealing with MS, an illness that has put her life on hold. Whilst Evie tries to put her life beck together, she’s assisted with the unlikely help of Nate, a man who feels partly responsible for Scarlett’s death and wants to help Evie.
I loved this story, it’s tender, poignant and heartbreaking, the dual narratives make for lovely reading as both women are stuck in their lives, one in death and one in the real world. It’s sad reading for both women, Scarlett’s parts are reflective, as she looks back on her life, her triumphs and regrets, her anger at it being cut short just before her 30th birthday and her sadness at Evie’s life. The illness has really come between the friends, Evie was once an outgoing woman with a musical career ahead of her but she’s dropped everything and retreated into herself. Under Scarlett’s watchful eye, Nate and Astrid, Evie’s new neighbour helps her rediscover her life.
Beautifully written, ‘One Moment’ is a story that captures the readers heart, reflective, tender, it focuses on the terrible condition of MS and how dilapidating it is and the impact it has. An emotional story that stays with the reader long after the last page, this book is a beauty of a story and makes you wonder what if?
