No-one ever called Dan a pushover. But then no-one ever called him fast-track either. He likes driving slowly, playing Sudoku on his iPhone, swapping one scruffy jumper for another. He’s been with Clara for four years and he’s been perfectly happy; but now she’s left him, leaving nothing but a long letter filled with incriminations and a small, white, almost hairless dog, named Doggo. So now Dan is single, a man without any kind of partner whether working or in love. He’s just one reluctant dog owner. Find a new home for him, that’s the plan. Come on…everyone knows the old adage about the best laid plans and besides, Doggo is one special kind of a four legged friend…and an inspiration.
Waiting for Doggo is an absolute must read for dog lovers,
I am a huge dog lover, having recently gotten a new Irish Terrier called Tess who has a passion for socks, I was delighted to read a book about a dog and I am particularly loving the Twitter campaign created to promote the book. In the past I have always enjoyed dog books, they regale tales of mishaps, obedience and in the most recent book ‘Marley And Me’ I was found in bits in my workplace and pretty much fell out with my friend for lending me the book. Although I was keen to get stuck into the book, I was also a bit dubious about the outcome.
First of all, I have to talk about the cover. I loved it. A simple eye-catching cover in black with a yellow chalk style drawing of the dog with a halo above its head. A story starts at the moment that Dan discovers a letter from his girlfriend Clara, who has gone off to find herself whilst pointing out all his flaws, she then tells him that she is leaving Doggo behind, a dog that she picked up from Battersea Dogs Home only a week prior to her departure. Wishing both Dan and Doggo both all the best with love and light, Clara leaves them both to form a reluctant friendship.
The story then flows on to follow Dan as he begins his life as a bachelor and a dog owner, he decides against returning Doggo to the dogs home and instead brings him to work in his new job in a busy advertising agency where Doggo becomes an integral part of the team playing the part of the postman.
Dan isn’t used to dogs, so it’s lovely to see the relationship between him and the grumpy mongrel dog develop. It’s sweet to read the tentative pats and licks as they begin to trust and respect each other.
As a leading character, Dan is a great one. He’s honest with his approach in life, his cynicism is entertaining and the best of all, is his relationship with Doggo, his sensitivity and curiosity as why this dog was abandoned. Doggo was a gentle character with a regal presence claiming the best seat in the house and his unique crush on Jennifer Aniston made me chuckle whenever anyone ever turned the television off would result in a barking attack.
Edie who was Dans colleague and she added a sweet touch of feminity to this mainly masculine story. She was a sweet character with a fiery temperament at times.
A funny story from the very beginning with the occasional sad moment, ‘Waiting For Doggo’ is a lovely written and witty tale about one man and his dog. A book about friendship and happy ever afters, this story highlights that dogs are just not for seasons, they are for life and above all they are your best friend.
