“This is a Love Story” is the first book by newcomer Jessica Thompson.

The story is simple. Boy meets girl and falls for her. And they live happily ever after. But as best friends.

The main characters Nick and Sienna catch each other’s eye on the train one day as they both laugh at a photograph of a squirrel on water skis. Immediately they are drawn to one another unaware of what the future has in store.

Sienna starts a new job in the publishing house where Nick already works as a graphic designer. It is through work that they then become best friends, sharing secrets, stories and the up’s and down’s of their relationships for the next five years, unaware of their feelings towards each other but to the outside world it is completely obvious.

From the start I fell in love in this book, the first reason was the cover. It was delicious, so pretty I just wanted to eat it up. And the characters particularly Nick and Sienna, I really enjoyed them, both were likable and warm and terribly easy to relate to. As the story is told from the perspective from both characters, it was lovely reading how the relationship progresses through the years and their feelings grow stronger but they remain friends and try to keep their true feelings hidden. I loved Sienna, I thought she was one of the sweetest characters I had the joy of reading in recent months. She was a delight to read, as she struggled to deal with her feelings for Nick and her father’s illness, she still managed to care for people around her and was unaware of the joy that she brought to people’s lives. I particularly enjoyed seeing her through Nick’s eyes which in some books can be overly soppy but with Nick’s descriptions of her radiating beauty and his silent declarations of love for her, you couldn’t help but smile.

A lovely, warm hearted read, that had you smiling from start to finish. A book that I looked forward to reading from the day it arrived at my door and made me a little bit sad when I came to the last page. A beautiful debut from new-comer Jessica Thompson,”This is a Love Story” is must for everyone who believes in love.
