Saved by Cake by Marian Keyes

Saved by Cake book cover

When well loved Irish author Marian Keyes announced her first cookery book was to be released this year, there was a sigh of relief from her fans.

It’s well known that Marian suffers from depression, and earlier this year Marian revealed her latest book would be a cookery book and it was inspired by the baking she did whilst in her darkest hours.

The introduction to the book, is a emotional and honest account, in which she describes her experience of the illness, the feelings of loneliness and suicidal thoughts which can make for hard reading as we are so used to her humour in her previous funny novels. But thankfully with discovering her love for baking, this new passion has given her a new motivation and love for life.

With over 80 recipes to bake yourself happy, there is a recipe for everyone and every occasion. Not being much of a cook myself, I attempted the Blondie Cupcakes and I was impressed with the outcome. As I followed the simple step by step guides, I discovered that I can bake!

“Saved by cake” can only be described as an inspirational read, as a courageous Marian lets us into her world and reveals how she tackled the illness. Hopefully this will be the case for others as they discover that there is light at the end of the tunnel, if not through cooking, then perhaps at least, they can discover a new hobby.

Filled to the brim with delicious recipes and easy to follow instructions, “Saved by Cake” is a beautifully presented book packed with mouth-watering images of tasty tarts, buns and cakes and the occasional dash of Marian’s wit makes the book a delightful treat to brighten up someone’s day.
