It Happened In Venice by Molly Hopkins

It Happened in Venice

“It Happened In Venice” is the second novel by Molly Hopkins, in her “It Happened In” series.

After cheating on her, but only once, Evie Dexter has promised to forgive her fiancé, Rob and try to move on. But, it’s difficult to do so when Rob seems to be hiding so many secrets. Thankfully her job as a tour guide keeps her occupied and provided with a regular income with trips to Dublin, Amsterdam and Marrakech. But when Evie is offered a luxury visit to the beautiful city of Venice, she jumps at the chance completely unaware of the future has in store.

“It Happened In Venice” is a fun and quirky story that regularly made me giggle. Written in a sharp and fresh style that keeps the reader on their toes, it bursts with vibrant descriptions of exotic locations. Whilst also cleverly giving tips along the way of tourist attractions that fortunate Evie got to discover on her tour guiding job.

Although I enjoyed the book, I did find some characters annoying. Evie as the leading lady is a likeable character that you can easily warm to, with her kind nature and occasional innocence about the world, you can understand why so many people want to be her friend. But it was her best friend, Lulu that irritated me. I found her to be quite selfish and self absorbed at times, but then there were other occasions I found her to be quite witty as she struggled to give up smoking. Another thing I observed in the book, was that all the men in Evie’s life, Rob, John and Nik were all men of powerful statues and all seemed to want to control Evie. I found this so frustrating that I was constantly urging her to stand up on her two feet and take control of her own live and not live by other people’s orders. Instead of coming across that they wanted to look after her, it seemed that they wanted to dictate her most important decisions, which was exasperating at times.

Even though there were a few characters that annoyed me, I did find myself enjoying “It Happened In Venice”, With a lovely, cheeky cover, this book is a fun and light read packed with witty one liners and envious lifestyles that will definately brighten up your day!
