My Favourite Book By Rebecca Chance

Rebecca ChanceRebecca Chance, ‘Sunday Times’ bestselling author of ‘Bad Brides’ takes time out from her busy schedule, to tell us what her favourite book is.

Obviously, this is an impossible question to answer. Just one, out of all the books I love? How can I possibly pick? How could anyone? Help! Of course, if lots of people flood into the comments section to tell me that they find it the easiest thing in the world to name their favourite book, and that I’m a pathetic, indecisive woos for rabbiting on like this without committing to one, I’ll stand corrected… and here I am, still not picking one!

Well, I can’t. I can’t pick my favourite author either, and I’ve been asked this question many times. The best I can do is name a few titles: Tanith Lee’s ‘The Birthgrave’ and her ‘Personal Darkness’ series are wonderful examples of her writing, which is an amazing, compelling cross of fantasy, feminism and fairy tale, and truly original. Peter O’Donnell’s ‘Modesty Blaise’ series are brilliant caper/adventure/thriller novels, with a really strong and kickass heroine. Charlotte Bronte’s ‘Villette’ is not only beautiful and sad but extraordinarily trippy and strange – very ahead of its time. And if I had to pick one Agatha Christie novel (she’s one of my favourite writers) it would be ‘Endless Night’. She nails the male narrator’s voice, a brash young man from a poor background, perfectly, and no matter how many times I read it, the twist always sends a shiver down my spine.
