Bella and Andy have escaped the rat race for the sun-drenched, relaxed lifestyle on the island of Ibiza. But with a run-down house to make habitable and a distractingly gorgeous neighbour, is their island idyll all that it seems? Tamara Gold has been Hollywood’s most notorious car crash since she was a child star. Now clean and sober, and engaged to Tinseltown’s hottest leading man, it seems like she’s finally conquered her addictions, if not her bratty behaviour. But a summer in Europe with all the hedonistic lures of Ibiza beckons…Summer Larsson has always known Ibiza as home: a haven of hippies, yoga and healthy eating – and loneliness. But in Bella, she’s found the friend she always needed, and when Bella’s glamorous Hollywood friends come to visit, it looks like she might have found true love as well…This could be the summer that everything changes…
This is the first book that I have read by Lucy and thought it was a nice introduction to the author. It flowed at a fast pace, with plenty of twists and turns that keep the reader hooked. Set against the buzzing backdrop of Ibiza, this book was also the perfect escapism read, away from the dark and windy autumn evenings.
Even though the story is called ‘A Girl Called Summer’, and there is girl called Summer in it, the story doesn’t entirely focus on her alone. In fact there is a host of characters from all ranges of backgrounds and classes of life, that makes for quite compelling reading.
The story starts off as the newcomers arrive from England to start a new pace of life, they are a young couple called Andy and Bella and their new baby Daisy. They hope this new quiet location will help Andy finish his historical novel, but that becomes quite difficult as there is always a distraction or a bad connection with their intermittent wifi. Bella soon befriends Summer, after she joins her mothers yoga class and Summer becomes Daisy’s minder. Summer is a much lusted after woman, with her Scandinavian looks and lust for life and passion, she knows everything there is to know about Ibiza and food as she writes a food column on a successful website. She becomes Bell’s friend and confidante and together they form a tight bond. Poppy is Bella’s best friend, a frantic character who is a reporter for MTV, she enjoys nothing more than a good party or music festival and when her best friend takes up residence in the clubbing capital, her, her husband Damian and their friends quickly visit. Jack and Tamara are a successful Hollywood couple, who’s fame is rising considerably with getting bigger roles in higher budget films. Tamara, for me is the best character in the book, as a child star is spoilt, vulnerable and battling a lot of demons. She is petulant when she doesn’t get her own way and craves always to be in the spotlight but underneath, she is insecure and would love to be genuinely loved. These four ladies were the main characters of the story, but there loads of sub characters, that makes the book for succulent reading. The story then follows onto the consequences that arise when Hollywood hits Ibiza.
A juicy tale that you can sink your teeth into, it’s a glamorous and sexy roller coaster of a story making ‘A Girl Called Summer’ the perfect poolside read, no matter the season!
