I deserve all this because I did the worst thing a woman can do. The very worst. Jessica’s wedding was like a fairytale. She looked radiant in a dress strewn with crystals. Her Dad conquered his nerves and made a tearful speech. And her gorgeous husband Matthew declared himself the luckiest man alive. Together, Jessica and Matthew feel like they can take on the world But when their beautiful baby girl is born, Jessica is gripped with panic and fear. She can’t tell anyone how she feels. Even when her life starts to spiral out of control. This is her story. A mother’s story.
I have read some books in my time that I have described as powerful, but this book is powerful on a whole new level.

Jessica and Matthew make the perfect couple, best friends, lovers and soulmates they are made for each other and can’t get enough of each other. Jessica is a fun, creative character with a zest for life, constantly on the go, she is filled with passion especially for her husband who she heavily relies on. Where Jessica is zany, Matthew is more practical and sensible of the pair, as a solicitor, he earns the most money out of the two and would do anything for his wife. But in a night of passion, their life plan suddenly goes out the window and Jessica finds herself pregnant. Disappointed that it has happened earlier than they had originally intended, they move on and prepare for the excitement of becoming parents. But when Jessica’s labour goes wrong, all the control is taken out of her hands, when she has to have an emergency caesarean. But when Jessica comes round from the operation and is handed her little girl for the first time, Jessica doesn’t feel love for Bethany and instead feels extreme fear. The story is written in two tenses, the past tense when Jessica and Matthew start out their lives with Bethany and when things start to go to wrong and in the present tense, seen from the first person perspective of Jessica. The flow of the narrative and her thoughts tell us that something dramatic has happened to her perfect life as she’s now away from them.

Intense from the very beginning, it’s obvious that this young couple are not going to get their happy ever after but what happens after their little girl is born makes for troubling reading, as Matthew adapts to the parent role naturally falling in love with his daughter whilst Jessica becomes an outsider, her emotions reeling from sadness to jealousy.

The story deals with post natal depression in a frank and sensitive light that makes for gripping and chilling reading, an emotional roller coaster of a tale and highlights the difficulties of a new mum and the pressure they feel. ‘A Mother’s Story’ is a beautifully written and emotional story that leaves the reader distraught at its twists and turns.
