Ben Chambers wakes up to find something rusty and lost underneath the willow tree in his garden. Refusing to throw it on the skip as his wife Amy advises, he takes it home.
The story is seen through the eyes of Ben Chambers, the underdog of the story. Unhappy with his life, he’s kind of given up, his wife Amy looks at him with pity as he’s not as driven as her. After his parents were tragically killed in an aeroplane accident, Ben’s dream of becoming a vet, came to a standstill and found himself stuck in a rot. Amy and his older and bossier sister Bryony, found him frustrating that he’s reached a certain age in his life and is still behaving like he has no responsibilities.
But, when an aged and dilapidated robot called Tang suddenly appears in their garden one day, Ben’s life changes and he finds himself on a whirlwind adventure to try to bring Tang back to his home and find out why this little creature decided to come into his life.
This is genuinely a heartwarming story and as a debut, it certainly stands out for its originality. Both the lead character are lovable and entertaining, as they both go off travelling as strangers but quickly become firm friends and even a paternal friendship develops as Ben takes the clunky little robot under his wing and rapidly becomes protective of the curious little creature. I adored Tang, with his childlike innocence and curiosity, he wanted to know the ins and outs of everything. Even though he wasn’t as highly regarded as the more superior android creatures, he stood out with his gentle nature and wisdom. Ben was also an fascinating character, as he developed over their journey, the time gave him an opportunity to reflect on where his life had gone wrong and how to go about fixing it.
With a stunning cover of the illustrated robot in black and gold, this book is a coming of age story about friendship and finding your place in the world, whether you are made of flesh and tin, we all want to be loved and wanted. A story that spans across many countries, ‘A Robot In The Garden’ is a lighthearted and poignant tale, packed with humour, love and adorable little robot that just wants to make friends.
