About Last Night by Adele Parks
About last Night is Adele Parks latest number one bestseller and boy was it a a treat! I have been a fan of Adele Parks for a number of years, so I am fully aware of torrid affairs and deception but nothing could prepare me for just how dark her latest book would be.
Stephanie and Pip have been best friends for over thirty years, ever since boisterous eight year old Pip approached quiet Stephanie in a crowded playground, they had been inseparable, always there for each other to lend a helping hand and a shoulder to cry on.
As the years pass, Stephanie settles naturally into her role as a married mother of three young boys, a loving wife to Julian and occasionally a lady of leisure, meanwhile for Pip, life is a lot more complicated after recently becoming a single mother when her husband fled the country leaving her and her daughter Chloe homeless and penniless, but reliable Stephanie is there to help pick up the pieces.
Life is perfect for Stephanie, until one day she discovers a mobile phone in the back of the car with a voicemail telling her that her regular room is ready, she realises that things are far from perfect and that her husband is having an affair. Distraught at the idea of him being with another woman, she loses control of her normally perfect life and when an accident occurs and Julian is injured, Stephanie asks Pip to do her the ultimate favour “I need you to say that I was with you”, as she tries to keep her carefully constructed life together and to protect her family from shocking secrets.
Pip, who knows that she owes Stephanie a lot for helping her turn her life around and is normally the one who is seeking help, is hesitant to take on the responsibility of lying for Stephanie. Especially when things seem to looking up for her when she gets a new job and meets a new man Robbie, who doesn’t look like he’s about to run off, but with telling this little lie, the new life that she has created could be in jeopardy.
Suddenly their friendship is hanging in the balance as both women are battling to do the same thing – to protect their families.
Wow, this book was a shocker from start to finish, I immediately was addicted to it. I especially loved Stephanie who at the start comes across as quite a timid, weak person but through the story you see her develop into a stronger character, with each challenge that is thrown at her. I would thoroughly recommend this book to everyone, but be warned it is a bit different and a lot darker than her previous novels but that’s what makes it even better. What I loved about this book in particular, was the sudden role reversal of the friendship, as Stephanie now needs Pip’s help, Pip has to wonder about that age-old question, How far would you go for your best friend?
About Last Night, is another wonderfully compelling book from one of Britain’s finest authors.
