Amelia has a dream of toasting chestnuts by the fire with her husband Jack in their own cosy cottage. Their real life is another world, a cramped one-bedroom flat in Hackney. But when life takes a surprising turn, removal vans are soon heading to the Kent countryside. They soon realise that the cottage makeover is a far bigger project than they had anticipated. On top of that, there’s Amelia’s newly loved up mum and her tearaway half sister Mirabel, to contend with – pushing Amelia and Jack’s marriage to breaking point. Amelia begins to strip back the wallpaper and fittings in the cottage and discovers the story of the cottage’s previous owner and a hidden secret. As Amelia’s ideas about family and love change, will her fireside dream finally come true?

Even though ‘Amelia Grey’s Fireside Dream’ is Abby’s third book, I am a huge fan of the author and always when I start her stories I have a tingly feeling of warmth spread through me as I tuck into her tales of creativity and love.

Before I read the story, I had read on Twitter that another reviewer had stated this was Abby’s best book to date, so I was even more curious and eager to delve straight.

In Abby’s trademark style, ‘Amelia Grey’s Fireside Dream’ is filled to the brim with love, friendship and an injection of the authors creative flair, not her usual recipes, but in this story her creativity flows through the mood boards and the inspiration behind Amelia making her dream cottage a home.

Amelia, the lead character, was a wonderful lady, settled in a small flat with her husband Jack and their cat Dexter, she works hard in the local high school teaching her students the importance of education. But when, an opportunity arises for her to fulfil a lifelong dream of owning a cottage before her 30th birthday she jumps at the chance especially when a more senior position becomes available at the school, it’s obvious that she would be the first choice, but sadly that is not the case and Amelia finds herself jobless and the owner of a rundown cottage. Seizing the opportunity with both hands, she sets about fulfilling her dream whilst on a tight budget.

To be honest I was terribly envious of Amelia, I loved joining her as she turned the cottage around, I discovered that I was quite jealous of her dream home which turns out to be quite similar to mine and her natural gift for creating such wonderful things. Even though I loved this story, the characters were sweethearts, best friends that you could envy and relate to as they all settled into their expected lives, I did seem to find this story a little bit more serious and darker than Abby’s previous books and for this, I think I enjoyed this book even more. As Amelia battled with new feelings of attraction to someone who wasn’t her husband and dealt with issues of her parents separation when she was a child and finally found the courage to speak up for herself, all this made for captivating reading.

Wonderfully written from start to finish, ‘Amelia Grey’s Fireside Dream’ is another great novel from Abby, touching, intriguing with lots of lovely moments, this story was a joy to read.
