Nova Reed used to have dreams of becoming a famous drummer, of marrying her true love. But all of that was taken away in an instant. Now she’s getting by as best she can, though sometimes that means doing things the old Nova would never do. Things that are slowly eating away at her spirit. Every day blends into the next, until she meets Quinton Carter. Quinton once got a second chance at life, but he doesn’t want it. The tattoos on his chest are a constant reminder of what he’s done, what he’s lost. He’s sworn to never allow happiness into his life, but then beautiful, sweet Nova makes him smile. He knows he’s too damaged to get close to her, yet she’s the only one who can make him feel alive again. Quinton will have to decide: does he deserve to start over? Or should he pay for his past forever?
‘Breaking Nova’ follows on in the same format as Jessica’s previous books, where there are two protagonists, a girl and a boy, who are both broken after something bad happens in their lives, making them feel that they are unworthy of love and are hitting the self destruct button.
In this case we have Nova, a budding drummer who has found love with her best friend. Happy with life, she looks forward to the future until one night she finds Landon dead, leaving no explanation only a video that she has yet to watch a year later. Returning home from university, she meets Quinton who has moved to the town to escape his own demons. Guilt ridden about an accident that he feels responsible for where his girlfriend and her cousin were killed, he spends his days hating that he survived and relies heavily on drug usage to get him through the day. The two of them meet through mutual friends and like Jessica’s other books, they try to stay away from each other but find a mutual understanding and comfort in their shared grief.
Both Nova and Quinton are strong and interesting people, before their troubles started, they were two happy people with their lives paved out in front of them and together they talk and begin to realise that they can move on if they allow themselves. I think out of all of Jessica’s books, Nova has to be my favourite character, she’s strong, caring and often in the flashbacks before Landon’s suicide, we see a fun and witty side to her. She battles hard with trying to understand why Landon killed himself and often veers from anger to deep sadness.
The chapters flick between the characters and contain quite dark and troubled scenes of drug abuse that do make for intense reading.
Another sensational and compelling story from one of our favourite Young Adult authors, ‘Breaking Nova’ is a sexily dark and emotional story about the struggles of moving on.
