Pia is living the dream; fresh out of college and sharing a house in Brooklyn with her best friends. So why is everything so complicated? A drunken indiscretion has led to the loss of her boring office job. Her love life is a dizzy mess of accidental hook-ups and heartbreak. Her parents don’t trust her and if she doesn’t sort out her life soon, they’re going to make her move back in with them. But all that’s nothing compared to the kind of trouble, she’s about to face. At least she can rely on her friends – Coco, Angie, Julia and Madeleine. But how much can she really expect them to put up with? Hipster bees, one-night stands, heartbreak, loan sharks and food trucks, this is Pia’s quest to find out what she really wants in life and how she’s going to get it.

What can I say about ‘Brooklyn Girls’? Well it is such a fast paced story that you literally have to strap yourself in so you can keep up the drama of young Pia’s life. A wonderful introductory lead, she was the perfect girl to start the new adult series, with a roller coaster of a life, chaos and theatrics seem to follow quite close to her. I loved Pia, a fiery and passionate girl with a lust for great food but minus the huge calorie count, she shows the world, how a young female entrepreneur can succeed. To be honest, I did find that I had a bit of a crush on Pia, I envied how she was starting out at the peak of her life in one of the most exciting and inspirational cities in the world, how she parties hard, everyone wants to be her friend and all the boys want to date her. She was the girl that everyone admired, unaware of the inner turmoil that she has to deal with, strict parents, a crazy loan shark and an ex that has suddenly resurfaced, her life is far is from perfect but to the outside world, everything is fine.

Surrounded by a close knit group of friends, they all each have individual traits that when coming together create the perfect friendship, providing shoulders and cookies at the most important of times. I loved the glamour, the designer clothes, venues and the fast paced life of the story, but I also particularly enjoyed, the elements of real life in it, the heartbreak and the pressures that young people are exposed to when starting out in life. these reality checks moments made for especially heartwarming reading when the girls friendships were tested at times.

I loved ‘Brooklyn Girls’ I thought it was wonderfully fresh and innovative, filled with characters that you can easily relate to, hot boys that you can lust after and fabulous quick witted and wonderfully creative dialogue, that will make you giggle and gasp in rapid succession particularly at the swear words and terms of endearment amused me immensely.

A splendid new voice for the young adult genre, Gemma Burgess is definitely another new Young Adult author to look out for.
