Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper By Charles Perrault and Camille Rose Garcia

‘Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper’ is the latest adaptation of the Charles Perrault, newly update with illustrations by renowned artist Camille Rose Garcia.

Cinderella has been ordered into servitude by her cruel stepmother and stepsisters, but when a costume ball is held for the kingdom’s marriageable prince, Cinderella’s fairy godmother gives her the chance to attend—disguised as a lavishly dressed and bejeweled princess. But Cinderella must depart at the stroke of midnight, lest her fine clothes turn to rags and her coach to a simple garden pumpkin. In her flight, she leaves a tiny glass slipper in her wake—the lovelorn prince’s only clue to her identity. Will he find her?

I’m a a huge fan of the fairytale ‘Cinderella’, so when I received a copy of the new illustrated book, I was surprised to see that updated version might not be the best idea for bedtime reading.

The story is the same story that we have all grown to love, but it’s the eye catching illustrations that accompany the story that makes for unsettling reading. Gone are the sweet and soft drawings and instead they are replaced with dark and shocking snakelike creatures that seem to burst from the pages.

The book is illustrated by Camille Rose Garcia and is her third in the series, having previously illustrated ‘Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland’ and ‘Snow White. Illustrated in sharp and vivid colours, the story conjures up images of creepiness, particularly with Cinderella’s ugly sisters with their long spindly necks. With a distinctive style and filled with quirky and zany charm and an touch of Tim Burton’s flair to it, ‘Cinderella’ is an delicious story and even though I enjoyed, I think it might be a little bit scary for the younger market.
