These three friends are dreading Christmas. Cat needs to get off the ‘has-been’ heap and rescue her flagging TV career but the demands of her extended family are reaching fever pitch and she barely has time to breathe. Meanwhile, Pippa has got too many balls to juggle as a struggling single mum trying to hang on to her family farm. And Marianne’s marriage is looking distinctly rocky now her beloved husband’s ex is back on the scene. Happy Christmas? Forget it. But Christmas is a time for miracles, and when the villagers learn they must fight for what they love, it becomes clear that there is festive magic in the air. Suddenly for Cat, Pippa and Marianne, it’s looking like it might just be a Christmas to remember.
‘Coming Home For Christmas’ sees Julia return to Hope Christmas, a small, close knit community that previously featured in her last Christmas book ‘A Merry Little Christmas’ and carries on some time later, as the village once again becomes the focus of an upcoming new development that could potentially ruin or do the small town the world of good.
The story is seen from the perspective of the three leading ladies and best friends, Pippa, Cat and Marianne, as they deal with the upcoming changes in the village as well as their own personal problems.
Pippa is becoming used to being a single farmers wife, even though her heart belongs to her first love Dan, he let her go as he didn’t want her to suffer, as he felt that he hadn’t recovered properly from the accident that he had in the previous book and was afraid for her. Although they love each other dearly and are still close with their three children and the farm.
Just as Marianne was sorting out her life, returning to work to provide an extra bit of income, Gabriel’s ex wife, Eve has a breakdown and with one to help, she ends up living with them. Awkward and cramped, Marianne feels out of her depth in her own house especially when her father becomes unwell. And finally there is Cat, once a successful chef with her own show and book series, she’s finding it hard to continue with her career, as she’s older and there are plenty of new kids on the block looking to take her place. Feeling old and stale, the only role she has, is being a grandmother to Lou Lou, her teenager daughters baby.
Together the three women form a strong cast, as they battle against the new development even though for each of them, the money would come in handy. Particularly Pippa with the failing farm. I liked these women, but I think my favourite from them is Pippa, how hard she worked and strived to care for her family with her broken heart.
Although the book is part of a series, Julia considerably tells the background of the characters, so the book could also be read as a stand alone book.
With a pretty illustration on the cover and warmly written that flows at a nice pace, this book is another lovely story from Julia. Packed with drama, lambs and festive spirit, ‘Coming Home For Christmas’ is a deliciously, engaging and enjoyable Christmas story, that will warm you up just in time for the Christmas season.
