‘I love your laugh. x’ But that was twelve years ago. It really began the day Georgina was fired from The Worst Restaurant in Sheffield (© Tripadvisor) and found The Worst Boyfriend in the World (© Georgina’s best friends) in bed with someone else. So when her new boss, Lucas McCarthy, turns out to be the boy who wrote those words to her all that time ago, it feels like the start of something. The only problem? He doesn’t seem to remember Georgina – at all.
After being away for a couple of years, I’m delighted to see that Mhairi is back with another book that literally had me giggling throughout.
In this book, we meet Georgina Horspool, a teenage girl who is destined for great things, smart with wit, everyone expects her to really make something of her life but sadly things don’t work out that way for her and she unfortunately become the punchline to everyone’s jokes, particularly her comedian boyfriend. But one day, she finds herself in a new job, working at the newest bar in town and her boss, is her first love called Lucas. The story then follows Georgina as she adapts to her new job with an unexpected friend in her life.
Like Mhairi’s previous books, I devoured this book in pretty much one day. I treated myself to a London adventure and spent my day with my head buried in my new Kindle on the tube or whilst admiring the view from The Shard. Georgina is a fabulous character, she’s witty, generous with a heart of gold and disastrous situations seem to follow her at every turn. With being 30, she’s feeling the pressure of not being settled, or bought a house much to the disgruntlement of her family, but she addresses their issues with brutal honesty and wit that made for delicious reading. I also absolutely fell for Lucas, the handsome Dubliner with a heart of gold and his dog called Keith.
Mhairi is a brilliant writer, her books are funny and honest but underneath the humour lies serious topics, such as bereavement, infidelity and self esteem and these issues, she handles with sensitivity and charm.
A wonderful story with a catchy title that will stay in your head, the whole you’re reading the book, ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ is a fantastically funny and witty story that will have you rolling in the aisles, with a fabulous lead and riddled with one-liners throughout, this book will brighten up anybody’s day!
