Carrie Hayes leads a perfectly nice life, with a perfectly nice job, and a perfectly nice boyfriend called Alan. But Carrie’s life wasn’t always like this. As a young, wild drama student, she married fellow actor, Richard Maddox, after a whirlwind romance. Life back then was full of possibilities and when Hollywood beckoned, Richard followed, leaving her behind. Now an A-list superstar, Richard’s life couldn’t be more different to Carrie’s, so when their paths cross in glamorous St Tropez, she can’t help but wonder what might have been. But with lovely, sensible Alan in tow, Carrie knows she needs to do the right thing. The only problem is, Carrie and Richard never quite got round to getting a divorce…
‘Escape To The Riviera’ is Jules Wake’s debut novel and it’s a wonderful introduction to the new author. Packed with handsome actors, temperamental teenagers and set against the glamourous location of the French Riviera, this book gripped my attention throughout.
The story is seen solely through the narrative of Carrie Hayes, a woman who has become complacent in life, settled in her job as a drama teacher, she lives with her sister and her niece and has just accepted her colleagues Alan, offer of engagement. But, there’s one snag, Carrie is already married to handsome Richard Maddox, a successful actor that is currently taking Hollywood by storm and filming his latest film in the French Riviera.
So Carrie packs up her bags, with her sister, her niece and plans on finally get that divorce that she planned on getting many years ago. But life is never that simple and seeing her husband brings back old feelings and memories about the one that caught away.
I genuinely loved this story, Jules has written a warm hearted story with enjoyable and relatable characters that made for the perfect escapism reading. Carrie, the lead character is a complex and kind character, having put her own life on hold for others, we see a woman finally begin to look out for herself and realise that it is time to get her life in order. Scenes with her and Richard, her estranged husband make for tender and funny reading, as the pair of them venture down memory lane and discover how differently their lives have turned out. Meanwhile her volatile and outspoken niece Jade, adds an injection of humour to the exotic tale.
A cleverly written and refreshingly fun story that had me giggling throughout, ‘Escape To The Riviera’ is a fabulously glamorous story and is definitely one of my favourite debuts from 2016.
