And they might be about to inherit both the good and bad from him – possibly his fortune, or possibly something more sinister. So Miles decides to track down his missing children. But a vicious killer is one step ahead of him. One by one, people are vanishing. Not just disappearing, every trace of them is wiped.
Welcome back Linwood Barclay and by welcome back, I mean it’s been a while since I’ve read one of his books, so I was delighted to be included in the book tour for ‘Find You First’ and just like his previous books, this one is just as thrilling and fast paced.
The story is primarily seen through the eyes of Miles Cookson, a multi-millionaire tech founder who has discovered that he’s got Huntington’s disease. Having not gotten married or had children, he’s at a loss as to who to leave his fortune with but remembers back to harder times when he donated sperm and wants to reach out to these unknown children and leave them money. With a list in hand, Miles is on a quest to be reunited with them, but there’s also someone else who has this list and is joking the teenagers off before Miles gets to meet them. With the aid of the his new daughter Chloe, an aspiring documentarian, they are trying to get to them before it’s too late.
Linwood has a skill of creating a crazy scenario that really pulls the reader in with a race against time thriller and this book is just as pacy. Miles is a great character, he’s ruthless having pissed his older brother Gilbert off because he won’t leave his fortune to him as he hates his wife, but in another way, he’s kind wanting to reach out to these strangers and offer them a better life. There are sympathetic scenes in the story when the illness actively affects him and he has to reluctantly acknowledge that all the money in the world won’t cure him. Whilst Chloe is a fiery character, going against her mother’s wishes to look up her family DNA and hopes that using her story will help her establish her career. There are narratives throughout the story that make for intriguing reading, as Linwood takes you on a mystery journey of whodunnit and why before wrapping everything seamlessly in the end and leaving you breathless at the final page.
A taunt and well paced thriller that pulls the reader in from the first page. ‘Find You First’ is a dramatic race against time suspense tale that you can’t put down. A story that you become emotionally involved in with real world problems and twists that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
