James is everything Tish has ever wanted in a husband, she’s married the man who even her mother approves of. He’s handsome, dependable and will make an excellent mother, unlike Tish’s first love, the disreputable Fergal. Her teenage sweetheart abandoned her for a music career and now lives a typically celebrity lifestyle. Fergal broke her heart but thankfully James was there to fix it.
Now they’ve brought a country cottage. It’s only natural that the next step will be kids and a life of domestic bliss. Well, that’s the plan. And even if James has a slight tendency to view the village pub as his new second home, their relationship is still in pretty good shape after seven years of marriage. So why is the marriage to Mr Right making her wonder about Mr Wrong.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I thought it was the perfect afternoon read, filled with rugged handsome rockstars and arrogant pompous men, there is a man for every woman to lust after. I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of all the animals in this book which made it a very funny story, with Tish’s dog Bess, the lovingly adorable yet dopey Bichon Frise who she regularly calls a ‘Stupid Bitch’, in the beginning I initially found it a bit offensive but as the story progresses, I began to understand the author’s way of thinking. The added bonus of an insulting parrot also made me giggle. As well, as stupid animals there were nosy neighbours, peering over hedges and wise shopowners who always there to offer Tish advice about the countryside way of life.
I shouldn’t have liked him, but I did enjoy James. His scenes were interesting, as he struggled with a mid life crisis and adjusts to his new quieter way of life. He was terribly arrogant, vain and his flippant remarks towards Tish regularly made me twitch in anger. He was a horrible, horrible man, but was such a major character, that the story would have been terribly dull without him. Whilst Fergal, was the perfect man to play the one that got away, a handsome gentleman, he is mysterious and charismatic. Tish as the lead, was a joy, as she struggled with the new burdens of life, she embraced them wholeheartedly with enthusiasm and vigour and had always a sharp comeback. Other supporting characters, such as Tish’s clingy mother and snappy grandmother also made for vibrant characters, that I chuckled along with.
‘Good Husband Material’ is a wonderful story, that will have chuckling you throughout, with fabulous rockstars, cute puppies and an inspirational leading lady. The story is wittily and warmhearted written and will definitely make you wonder if the grass is indeed greener on the other side.
