Gypsy Wedding by Kate Lace
If you were suffering from withdrawal when the Channel Four series “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” ended, then fear no more with the release of “Gypsy Wedding”, the new book by Kate Lace.
Seventeen year old Vicky has been engaged to her perfect fiancé Liam, for two years and as a traveller girl, it’s high time she settled down and it seems that everyone is planning her big day, everyone except Vicky.
Vicky has other things on her mind, like convincing her father and Liam to let her to go to college, so she can study dress-making. Although neither of them are happy about it, they grant her permission, so she’s given one year and that’s just enough time for her to create her own bridesmaid’s dresses.
But a lot of can happen in a year, as Vicky is given her freedom to study, she discovers there’s a whole new world outside her trailer park filled with new people and adventures.
As time passes and Vicky is under more pressure to get her wedding sorted, Vicky begins to doubt whether a traveller’s life is really for her, especially when she begins to fall for someone else.
Kate Lace’s new novel tackles a subject which has been very much in the spotlight recently. However her approach in ‘Gypsy Wedding’ results in an interesting book which delves into the lives and traditions of the traveling community. As the book follows Vicky’s struggle to find her place in the world it becomes apparent that the life of a traveller can be a somewhat lonely existence.
‘Gypsy Wedding’ is an intriguing read however at times Vicky’s journey on the path to self-discovery can be slightly frustrating as her character has not completely formed an individual identity. This can be seen through Vicky initially questioning behaviour in the outside world, however as she experiences first hand exposure to this lifestyle she begins to enjoy the freedom it affords her. As Vicky struggles to find a happy medium, Lace allows her protagonist space to develop whilst contrasting the vast differences between the traveller and the outside world.
