Thanks to a rather relaxed attitude to contraception, Jamie and Laura Newman find themselves having an unexpected baby. It’s obviously a terrifying time for the young couple but as long as they stick together, they will be fine…right? They’d better because the path between falling in love and those first few baby steps is littered with obstacles.

OK, I will admit that when I first started ‘Love and Sleepless Nights’ I found it a little bit slow to get into, as the story is seen through the perspective of Laura’s diary entries to her dead mother and Jamie’s blog, it was interesting to see both sides of the story but at the start I thought Nick tried too hard with Laura’s entries and I occasionally found myself thinking, ‘Mmm is this really what a woman would think?’. But in the end I had to admit defeat and just enjoy the book for what it is, a pure laugh out loud roller coaster of a story that entertained my colleagues and myself for a day.

As the story progresses we join them in their manic and unprepared journey into parenthood, as a couple I thought Laura and Jamie made for the perfect lead characters, as they dealt with their new responsibility in complete utter bewilderment. One scene that I particularly enjoyed and I ended up reading aloud to my colleagues was when Laura was in labour and proceeded to tell Jamie what she really thought of him, the comic writing in that scene was pure genius!

With a terribly sweet cover, packed with witty dialogue, colourful language that regularly changed the pages blue and ridiculous scenarios that made for wonderfully funny reading. ‘Love and Sleepless Nights’ is a delightfully witty and crude story, about finding the one, settling down into married life and having to deal with the unexpected bump in the night. A story that had me howling with laughter until my sides ached, this book is a refreshing coming of age love story and Nick Spalding is definitely a author I shall be looking into.
