Eve Fletcher is trying to figure out what comes next. A forty-six-year-old divorcee whose only child has just left for college, Eve is struggling to adjust to her empty nest when she gets a text message from an anonymous number: “U R my MILF!” Over the months that follow, that message comes to obsess Eve. Meanwhile, miles away at the state college, Eve’s son Brendan discovers that his new campus isn’t nearly as welcoming to his hard-partying lifestyle as he had imagined.
Mrs Fletcher is a fun and uplifting story about the complexities and issues of growing old and flying the nest.
When Eve’s only son, Brendan leaves for university, her heart is broken. Divorced and alone, she misses her son, even though he occasionally annoys her with his stroppy, teenage way of thinking, she misses the familiar comfort of someone in the house. Brendan is delighted to be getting away, gaining independence and meeting new people, he’s eager to get away from his needy mother. But it seems that the tables have turned for the pair when Brendan doesn’t get quite the university experience that he hoped for, as his actions have made him question the type of person he is, meanwhile Eve is enjoying her new found freedom and making new friendships.
I loved this story, Eve was a wonderful character. She’s a sexy, older woman who men and women of all ages are attracted too and she’s almost like a Mrs Robinson character, seducing younger men whilst growing in confidence and rediscovering herself after years of being a fuddy mother. Brendan, I didn’t particularly him, I found him obnoxious and sexist and he was a typical jock that seemed surprised that women didn’t flock to him, like they did at high school. I was almost happy, when things don’t work out for him, so he could see life from a different perspective.
The story is seen primarily from the eyes of Eve and Brendan, but there was also the inclusion of the perspective of Amanda. A woman who joins Eve’s workplace and they become close friends, confiding about their lives.
Deliciously fun from the beginning, ‘Mrs Fletcher’ is a witty and warm hearted, coming of age story that will entertain you from page one.
