Eve Dallas is used to unwanted attention. Famous for her high-profile cases and her marriage to billionaire businessman Roarke, she has learned to deal with intense public scrutiny and media gossip. But now Eve has become the object of a singular and deadly obsession. She has an ‘admirer’, who just can’t stop thinking about her. Who is convinced they have a special bond. Who is planning to kill for her – again and again.. With time against her, Eve is forced to play a delicate – and dangerous – psychological dance. Because the killer is desperate for something Eve can never provide – approval. And once that becomes clear, Eve knows her own life will be at risk – along with those she cares about the most.

‘Obsession In Death’ was the first book that I’ve read by J.D Robb and it wasn’t the best introduction to the author despite her being the third most successful writer in the world. I’ve heard of her books but never picked up a copy. So, when I was asked to take part in the tour of release of her new book, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to get into a new author. I was told that even though I hadn’t followed the series, that I could read this book as a stand alone but sadly I discovered this not to be the case, as I spent the majority of book being lost.

The story is about Eve Dallas, a straight talking detective who is called to the scene of a crime where a lawyer has been brutally murdered and the killer has left a note for Eve reading “For Lieutenant Eve Dallas, with great admiration and understanding” and so begins a cat and mouse chase, as Eve tries to find the killer, who kills the people who Eve has had run-ins with over the years. On paper, this book has a great premise and the potential to grip the reader and lure them into a dark, futuristic world of obsession and lust, but this book really did fail grab my attention. It probably didn’t help that I don’t follow the series and I was pretty clueless. But, I felt this could have been prevented if there had been a bit of help from the author. As the story is set in the future, language and technology has advanced, so a lot of the time, I was a bit lost about what the gadgets were and what certain sayings meant, if there had been a description of these things at the start of the book, I think I would have settled into it, a bit more easily and maybe even have enjoyed it.

The story is seen in the third person through Eve’s eyes, she’s a sharp woman, who sees everyone as a suspect, her relationship with her work partner Peabody made for some lighthearted reading in this gory tale as the two women bounced off each other with ideas and theories and the only time Eve seems to really relax is with her handsome Irish husband Roarke. Occasionally, the story is also seen from the perspective of the killer, this was a clever move from J.D Robb, I thought as I seemed to pay more attention to these chapters, as I tried to figure out who the killer was.

A story that flows at a fast pace but regrettably isn’t for me, ‘Obsession In Death’ is a must read for fans of the the author.
