Christie Chapman is a single working mother who spends her days commuting to her secretarial job in London and looking after her teenage son, Finn. It can be tough just getting through the day but Christie has always found comfort in her love of crafting and any spare time she has is spent in her parents’ summerhouse working on her beautiful creations. From intricately designed birthday cards to personalised gifts, Christie’s flair for the handmade knows no bounds and it’s not long before opportunity comes knocking. All of a sudden Christie sees a different future for her and Finn – one full of hope and possibility, and if the handsome Max Alexander is to be believed, one full of love too. It’s all there for the taking. And then, all of sudden, Christie’s world is turned upside down. Christie knows that something has to give, but what will she choose? Will she give up her dreams and the chance of real love? What price will she pay for doing the right thing?
Carole is back with another great book that kept me occupied one cold Winter evening. Her combination of a tender yet fun story with a mixture of great personalities made for enjoyable reading.
The story is seen solely through the eyes of Chrissie Chapman, a struggling single mother with a love for arts and crafts and an even bigger love for her only son Finn. She spends her days commuting and finds the days long and that the daily journeys are gradually taking their toll on her. The only time she is truly happy is when she nestled in the bosom of her small family. When the opportunities arises to showcase her talent and skills at making crafts, she jumps at the chances and dreams of nothing more than providing a safer and more secure future for her son. But as Chrissie embraces the new challenge of changing careers and meeting new people she’s suddenly faced with having to deal with an unexpected illness.
The thing that I’ve come to love with Carole’s books is that they are so easy to read, with short chapters, it takes me only a matter of minutes to settle in and enjoy the book and this book was just great. The heroine of a story is a warm and relatable character who’s priority is her son, an outspoken and sweet teenager boy, who’s battling poor health. Chrissie works hard and enjoys her job as an PA but the long commute is hard on her and she wishes nothing more than to sit in her parents sunroom and create crafts with her son and pets for company. Her sole focus is her son, but when he’s not around she misses the companionship of company so when she meets handsome American Max through her love of crafts, she enjoys the attention and flirtation of a new relationship. She’s fortunate that she has a strong bond with her parents, who are always there to lend a helping hand.
This story is lovely rags to riches story and is a true one also! It’s an inspirational tale about following your dreams and anything is possible. Packed with tender and fun moments that I found really entertaining plus having a plethora of fun and relatable characters made the book impossible to put down. With a sweet and realistic storyline, humorous and witty moments and a handsome love interest, ‘Paper Hearts And Summer Kisses’ is another delightful story from one of the nations favourite authors.
