Playing Along By Rory Samantha Green

Playing Along‘Playing Along’ is the latest book by Rory Samantha Green.

Then: George Bryce was an awkward English schoolboy fantasising about being in a band.

Now: George is frontman of Thesis, an overnight indie band scene sensation. Intense, creative and self-effacing, his childhood dreams have all been fulfilled – so why does George feel so lost?

Then: Lexi Jacobs was a confident Californian high school cheerleader, planning her future marriage and a meaningful career.

Now: Lexi is searching for substance in a life world of mishaps. Cautious, bemused and rapidly losing the control she used to rely on, none of her teenage dreams have delivered and she’s left wondering “What next?”

Follow George and Lexi as they navigate their days thousands of miles apart. Fly with them to London and LA and back again as George copes with the dynamics of his tight knit band and loose knit family, while Lexi juggles her eccentric new boss, bored best friend and smother mother. Even though there’s an ocean between them and their world’s couldn’t be further apart. George and Lexi are pulled together through music and their paths appear determined to cross but the question is when?

‘Playing Along’ is such a terribly sweet story that really brought did bring me back to my youth, when I was younger and lusted after boybands. When I was filled with teenage angst imagining the unattainable boy was the one for me and one day, he would notice me in the crowd and suddenly realise that I wasn’t just another fan, sadly this didn’t happen to me and Billy Joe from Greenday has yet to know that I exist.

Wonderfully written this is a sublime story, that I was hooked on for one solid day. Told from the unique perspective of two strangers from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, shy and sensitive George, the lead singer of Thesis who has suddenly become an heartthrob overnight and Californian Lexi, who thought her life was set out before her finds herself alone and under the pressure to find a partner. Both people are at crossroads in their life, unaware of their connection.

I loved this story, I thought George was the most adorable lead that I also found myself falling for a bit, broody with a creative soul, grungy appearance and a charming nature that made girls fall at his feet, I could fully understand the hype and attraction of the young musician whilst Lexi was the Californian sweetheart, who’s life has taken a different turn but with her witty and open minded attitude, I thought she was charming and a character I could easily warm to. With the addition of George’s unruly bandmates and Lexi’s boss Russell, with his bohemian way of thinking and old fashioned dialogue, he regularly made me chuckle.

A story that will have you wondering if dreams can come true, ‘Playing Along’ is a wonderfully innocent and refreshing story that makes for irresistible reading.
