Life has been good for Andy since she has quit the job ‘a million girls would die for at Runway magazine’. Now, ten years later, she’s about to get married and she’s running her own successful magazine. But the night before her wedding, she can’t sleep. Is it just normal nerves, or is she having serious second thoughts. And why can’t she stop thinking about her ex-boss aka, the Devil? It seems that Andy’s efforts to build herself a bright new life have led her directly into the path of the Devil herself, bent on revenge.
Like every other fan of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ I was delighted and excited to hear that Lauren Weisberger was writing a sequel to it, but I also had my own reservations about the book, would it be as good as its predecessor or would it have been better to have left Andy and Miranda alone?
So when the book arrived, I dived straight in, eager to back in the world of cut throat publishing and fashion. From the start of the book, we join Andy on her wedding adventure as marries her husband Max, a man that she loves but she regularly thinks of Alex, the one that got away. As the story develops, Andy and her now best friend Emily, work hard at making their new bridal magazine ‘The Plunge’ a huge success, but in the background the presence of their ex-boss Miranda Priestly is known, as publising house Elias Clark wish to acquire the magazine.
Occasionally there are flashbacks in the story, as Andy remembers that fateful day in Paris when she quit and she regularly still feels fear for the boss that made her life hell for a few months, but in a strange way Miranda doesn’t feature in the book as much as I expected and I was surprised at this, as the book is called ‘Revenge Wears Prada’. But having said that, the few scenes that she does appear in, she is her usual scathing self that made the world love to hate her, resplendent in glamorous fashion and in a world where everyone wants to be her friend, Miranda is still the queen of disdain and cut throat remarks. The story focuses mostly on Andy’s development since Paris, how she has moved on, met Max and set up a business with Emily and I found this quite interesting, as I have a keen interest in the publishing industry, I found the story to be quite the eye opener in places. I always liked Andy and she is still her quiet self, eager to please but we do see glimpses of a fiery character as she has to deal with challenges that face her in the publishing and with Emily now being her surprising new best friend and work partner, I enjoyed the banter that they had whilst thinking up ideas for ‘The Plunge’.
Even though, I thought the book didn’t really suit the title, I have to say that I still throughly enjoyed the book and was delighted to see the familiar faces of Andy, Emily and Alex. Written in Lauren’s fresh and sassy style, ‘Revenge Wears Prada’ is a delicious read that was hard to put down. Set in the hard world of publishing world in the city that never sleeps, filled with fashion, glamour and plenty of backstabbing and some twists and turns that can never be expected. ‘Revenge Wears Prada’ sees the welcome return of everyone’s favourite assistant, Andy Sachs.
