Viv doesn’t like animals. And the feeling is mutual: animals seem to hate Viv too. So when she applies for a job at Wildflower Cottage, a tumbledown animal sanctuary which caters for a variety of unloved animals, she is not sure she will fit in. But then she catches sight of Heath, the owner, and things start looking up. Geraldine runs the Wildflower Cottage sanctuary. She’s a woman who has a secret in her past and who was drawn to the sanctuary just as Viv was. But her sanctuary is about to come under threat. Can she keep her past a secret and her future safe? Back home, Viv’s mother Stel thinks she might have found a man who will treat her right for once. Ian is kind, considerate, and clearly head over heels for her. That’s what she has wanted all along, isn’t it…?

Milly is back with another warm hearted tale that has made her one of the nation’s favourite authors with her stories about love, friendship, humour and an injection of serious issues that make her books addictive reading.

In her latest book, we follow the lives of many women but the story primarily concentrates on Viv, a young woman who finds herself working on an animal sanctuary that is on the cusp of closing down. Viv isn’t the world’s biggest animal lover but finds herself friends with a three legged donkey called Wonk and an anti-social owl called Bea. It’s in her new job that she adjusts to the slower pace of life, she finds herself clashing with her moody, handsome boss, Heath. Geraldine her other boss, is loving her job but there is a sense of unease with the character, as she tries to relax but is constantly looking over her shoulder.

Meanwhile back home, her mum Stel gets used to living alone with only her cat, Basil for company, she finds companionship in the new gardener at work, Ian.

The story is packed with a host of characters that make for relatable and heartwarming reading. Viv, is a sweet soul with her gift of being able to distinguish smells, she is a unique woman who isn’t afraid of hard work nor her humpy boss. Geraldine, takes Viv under her wing like a mother and two of them embark on a genuine friendship based on humour and trust.

The story flows around the three main characters but there is an inclusion of The Old Spice Girls, a group of older women including Stel who meet weekly to put the world to rights as well as vent their issues.

I loved this story, sweet snd lighthearted from the very beginning, the characters are entertaining and the stories flow at a lovely pace coming together nicely in the end. In Milly’s style, there is a sense of mystery and magic to the tale that has the reader on their toes as they try to guess the ending. Filled with sweet animals, humour and a beautiful setting, ‘Sunshine Over Wildflower Cottage’ is a deliciously enchanting story that makes for captivating reading.
