The Divorce By Moa Herngren
‘The Divorce’ is the latest book by Moa Herngren.
Together for more than thirty years, Bea and Niklas live a comfortable life in Stockholm. But one evening, following a trivial argument, Niklas disappears. Weeks pass before it emerges that he has met someone else. To Bea’s horror, he insists they must divorce. But is this divorce really coming out of the blue? Is the person who does the leaving always the one at fault? What emerges once you begin scratching the surface?
Set against the bleak and atmospheric backdrop of Stockholm, ‘The Divorce’ is a fascinating insight into the demise of a relationship where one person initially feels blindsided by it all but as it’s seen from the narrative of husband and wife, you’re really getting both sides of the story and I was totally here for it.
Seen from the perspective of Bea and Niklas, Bea is confused as to why her husband isn’t answering her calls and texts and feels hurt and hard done by the sudden change in her husband’s behaviour and I found myself sympathising with Bea but when I started reading Niklas narrative, my opinion completely changes!
He’s a kind soul who’s spent his life keeping Bea happy and putting her wants and needs before his and she really is an incredibly selfish person. So initially I felt sorry for her but then I was delighted for Niklas finally getting the life and freedom that he deserved.
There really is two sides to every story especially when it comes to divorce and this book really reflects it, the dividing of materials, family, friends taking sides and occasionally I did feel story for Bea as she loved Nikolas’ family as though they were her own.
Beautifully written with vivid imagery and dialogue, An emotional and realistic look into the demise of a relationship, ‘The Divorce’ is an addictive story about the breakdown of a family, the heartbreak and identity.
