Heartbroken after being jilted at the altar, Sybil has been saved from despair by her knitting obsession and now her home is filled to bursting with tea cosies, bobble hats, and jumpers. But, after discovering that she may have perpetrated the cock-up of the century at work, Sybil decides to make a hasty exit and, just weeks before Christmas, runs away to the picturesque village of Tindledale. There, Sybil discovers Hettie’s House of Haberdashery, an emporium dedicated to the world of knitting and needle craft. But Hettie, the outspoken octogenarian owner, is struggling and now the shop is due for closure. And when Hettie decides that Sybil’s wonderfully wacky Christmas jumpers are just the thing to add a bit of excitement to her window display, something miraculous starts to happen.
‘The Great Christmas Knit Off’ is the start of a brand new series by Alexandra and sees her swapping her luxurious department store for a sweet haberdashery. Set in the picturesque and fictional village Tindledale, we are introduced to the heroine of the story Sybil affectionately known as Sybs as she and her ever hungry and playful dog Basil decide to go on an adventure to visit her best friend Cher. After being jilted at the alter, by her fiancé and twin sister, she needs to mend her broken heart and escape an issue at work that may or not be her fault, she finds solace in the quiet snow covered village, where everyone is friends and looks out for each other.
Sybs is particularly drawn to Hettie, a sweet old woman who like her has a love and flair for knitting and together the two of them form a tight friendship over the clacking of needles. And when Hettie’s nephew wants to put her in a home so he can get his hands on her shop, it’s Sybs who organises the troops to help raise fundings for all Hettie’s bills.
The story is a sweet one, filled with boisterous and outspoken characters that regularly made me chuckle. Sybs is a lovely lead and one that you hope finds her happy after as she stresses about being alone, you can’t help but want to hug her and tell it will be alright especially after being hurt so badly by her self absorbed twin sister. Other supporting characters that give the story a lot of warmth are Lawrence and Ruby, two people that take Sybs under their wing in the village, the handsome doctor Ben and not to mention, Hettie, a kind woman with a colourful life.
Fun from the very beginning, ‘The Great Christmas Knit Off’ is a lovely introduction to Alexandra’s new series, filled with goodwill, drama and a friendly little dog, I eagerly look forward to next book from this delightful series.
