Single mum and cafe owner Estelle, sets up a book group to increase custom as she struggled to make ends meet. Having watched the local bookshop close, she doesn’t want her dreams to come to the same sad end. When her first choice of Thomas Hardy makes the small group feel like they are back at school, she hastily suggests a bestselling erotic novel as the next book to read and discuss. The group begins to read erotic fiction working through some of the classics. With Marquis de Sade and Shirley Conran on the list, the group are in for some saucy discussions and as they start to meet regularly, friendships are formed. Inspired by their sizzling reads, the group of shy readers gradually shake off their inhibitions and discover a whole new side to themselves with some tantalising results.
I absolutely adored this book, I thought it was a wonderfully written, fun and titillating read that had me hooked. Seen through the perspectives of five characters, the story follows the lives of the strangers who all come together to share their mutual love of books, but this is no ordinary book club, this book club is exclusively for erotica and for all those who enjoy a bit of spice in their lives.
The five characters are all interesting people but behind closed books they all harbour secrets. Estelle, the owner of Cafe Crumb and the host of of the book club, longs to find love and it’s been eight years since her divorce and misses the companionship and passion of a lover. She throws herself into her cafe, committing herself to her work providing the small town with their favourite tray bakes. Rebecca is bored with her life, tired of a mundane routine, she longs to inject some passion into her marriage. Meanwhile Sue has just retired and wants to make of her time, but her husband George has other ideas and is content settled in front of the television whilst outspoken Grace is a lover of the 1950s and the only male of the group is young Reggie, who has joined the group purely for research reasons for his upcoming thesis. I loved the characters in this book so much, all so bubbly and bursting with fun and although I enjoyed them all, I did find myself harbouring a soft spot for Reggie, wonderfully quiet, intense and quite masterful, I thought he was great and with the scenes that included him, I found myself imagining Andrew Garfield in his role.
‘The Naughty Girls’ Book Club’ is a wonderfully fun book that I would recommend everyone should read. Bang on trend, the books release has come out just as all the hype of The Fifty Shades of Series continues to grow. Although I read that series of books, I read them purely out of curiosity more than anything else, I didn’t enjoy them, I found myself glancing around furtively making sure people weren’t trying to sneak a peek over my shoulder at all the dirty bits but this wasn’t the case with this book at all. This book was a joy to read, as it had a gripping story that wasn’t purely based in the bedroom although it was packed with sexy naughty scenes that make you giggle, but you can’t complain about that.
With a wonderful array of interesting characters and a juicy storyline that you can sink your teeth into, ‘The Naughty Girls’ Book Club’ is a fabulously refreshing and saucy read about books, cakes, naughtiness and most importantly friendship. A fabulous triumph from Sophie Hart, a must read for all book clubs!
