Willow Carruthers, British Oscar winner, style icon and mother of three is facing a crisis. She’s broke, discovery of her partners’ infidelity has left her a single mother and if the banks have their way, she’s about to be homeless. Meanwhile nanny to Willow’s children, Kitty is desperate to keep her job and knows the perfect place that they can retreat too – her crumbling ancestral home in the Bristol countryside, Middlemist House.

To both women, in their hour of need, the idea of leaving LA seems brilliant in theory, but a whole new challenge in reality.

This book is a wonderfully delicious read, written in a easy flowing style, that moved along at the lovely pace, we joined Willow on her first journey as a single mother and Kitty as she tried not to fall for the attentions of known lothario Ivo. It was a thrilling story in parts as the two women tried to find their ways in life, all whilst both harbouring secrets that could potentially ruin them.

Flitting between the tranquil locations of the countryside to the fast paced streets of London and LA, this book makes for the perfect escapism read, filled with sex, gossip and full of intrigue, that had me hooked from the very beginning. With the two female leads, I enjoyed them both equally, both strong women fighting for their places in life, and both Ivo and Merritt as the love interests were also a nice addition. But, I mostly thought the scenes with the children which made for tender and sweet reading, particularly with Lucian as he struggled to adapt to life and Poppy with her outspokenness particularly made me chuckle.

‘The Perfect Retreat’ is a compelling story about the price of fame and friendship, that makes for perfect sunshine reading. Kate Forster is a new author for me and her book was thoroughly enjoyable and did remind of Tilly Bagshawe, which in my opinion is a wonderful thing and is definately an author I will looking into in the future.
