The Roughest Draft By Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka
‘The Roughest Draft’ is the latest book by writing duo Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka.
Three years ago, Katrina Freeling and Nathan Van Huysen were the brightest literary stars on the horizon, their cowritten book topping bestseller lists. But on the heels of their greatest success, they ended their partnership on bad terms. They haven’t spoken since, and never planned to, except they have one final book due on contract. Forced to reunite they hole up in the tiny Florida town where they wrote their previous book, trying to finish a new manuscript quickly and painlessly. Working through the reasons they’ve hated each other for the past three years isn’t easy, especially not while writing a romantic novel. While passion and prose push them closer together in the Florida heat, Katrina and Nathan will learn that relationships, like writing, sometimes take a few rough drafts before they get it right.
This love story is a beautifully written one by a real life couple that had me captivated from the first sentence.
The story is written through the narrative of former friends and authors Katrina and Nathan , who once had huge success with their novel but after a mysterious break up. They now write alone but have never achieved the same success. They are under pressure to co-write together and Katrina decides as her fiancé is her agent and needs the work whilst Nathan’s new book isn’t leaping off the shelves. The story then follows the pair cramped up in Katrina’s house as they delve into their past, face old demons and try to write their next bestseller.
I loved the story, the dual narrative with past and present sequences made for lovely reading. The pair are an interesting duo, Katrina is a kind woman who likes to do things to keep others happy, including writing a book with a man who hurt her, whilst Nathan is hoping to revive his writing career and hoping to make amends with Katrina.
The chapters alternate between Katrina and Nathan and this lets the story flow at a lovely pace. Beautifully written, ‘The Roughest draft’ is a heartwarming love story about second chances.
