The Snow Globe By Sheila Roberts

[amazon_link id=”0349407398″ target=”_blank” ]The Snow Globe[/amazon_link]American author Sheila Roberts has generously treated us to three Christmas books this year and the first one I read was the sweetly named ‘The Snow Globe’. With a bright red cover of the festive snow globe, this book makes for warmhearted reading and with only 166 pages, it can easily be consumed in one sitting.

When Kiley Gray discovers an enchanting snow globe in an antique shop, she has no idea how much her life is about to change. For years, the snow globe has passed from generation to generation, somehow always landing in the hands of a person in special need of a Christmas miracle. Kiley could use a miracle herself. This year, all she wants for Christmas is someone to love. A hopeful shake leads her on an adventure that makes a believer out of her. When Kiley shares the story of the snow globe with her best friends-two women with problems of their own-they don’t believe it. But they’re about to discover that at Christmastime, sometimes the impossible becomes possible and miracles really do come true.

The story is about three best friends, Kiley, Suzanne and Allison, who go shopping one day and Kiley treats herself to a little snow globe. After hearing the magical story about the trinket, she hopes the globe will change her luck in life. After her ex-boyfriend dumps her for her younger, prettier sister, she has given up on relationships until the scene in the snow globe changes and she sees a vision a little closer to home. Scared that she is going mad, she shows it to Suzanne and Allison but they don’t see the same thing she does and then they begin to worry about their friends sanity. Until one day Kiley meets Craig, the man she sees in the snow globe. Finally happy that her life has changed direction, she passes the globe onto Suzanne.

Suzanne is practical and very cynical about the globe, especially when her little girl tells her that she sees a puppy in the globe. Trying to create the perfect life for her husband guy and their little girl Bryn, she sees the idea of a puppy as a hindrance and will destroy everything that she has achieved but it seems that the snow globe and Bryn have other ideas in store no matter Suzanne’s protestations. And finally Allison just wishes that the snow globe will bring her a happier life and feel part of a loved and normal family.

I enjoyed this story, as it’s quite short, it’s easy to get absorbed in. The characters are sweet and fun, each of the problems were relatable and I sympathised with them. The one thing that I did wonder about was the first part of the story of Kiley was 80 pages long and other 80 pages were about Suzanne and Allison combined and I did feel that their inclusion in the story was a bit rushed.

Apart from this, I thought it was a gentle and sweet story. ‘The Snow Globe’ is a captivating and magical book about love, puppies and is perfect for a Christmas evening.
