How far would you go to save the person you love? Luna is about to do everything she can to save her mother’s life. Even if it means sacrificing her own.
When it comes to Rowan Coleman, she’s been known for writing books that tug at the heartstrings, touching on sensitive issues such as domestic abuse and illness, stories that stay with you long after you reached the final page.
Her latest book, is something completely different for Rowan, something she was very honest about and worried how people would react to it, but for me, I adored this selfless tale about time travel.
The story is seen through the eyes of Luna, the eldest of two sisters, who returns to Brooklyn after her mother’s sudden death, with her younger sister Pea. They’ve been sent to New York to tie up some loose ends but it’s on this journey that their mother reveals a horrible secret through the power of a Super 8 camera. This secret is the reason Luna is alive and is also the reason behind her terrible death. It’s after this revelation that Luna has to figure out her fate and discovers that she’s capable of time travelling. She travels back to 1977 when her mother meets her father and falls in love. Luna becomes her mother’s friend as well as falling for a Michael, but as Luna delves further into past, her own future becomes uncertain.
I thoroughly loved this story, Luna is a beautiful and practical character who’s a selfless and kind person. With trying to change her mother’s past, she possibly might jeopardise her own future, but she’s determined to keep her mother safe. It’s not only in the past that she’s a protective person, but also in the present tense, she’s conscious of her younger sister and her troubled past of addiction. Her relationship with her mother is also strangely lovely, as they become firm friends, forging a bond with each other.
Beautifully and cleverly written with a captivating plot that was impossible to put down. I adored this poignant tale from the very beginning. Wonderfully reminiscent ‘The Time Travellers Wife’ which is one of my favourite books, ‘The Summer Of Impossible Things’ is a magical and emotional roller coaster about bravery and love, a tender triumph of a story.
